Why does Lumo Run need to use Location Services on my phone?

Lumo Run uses Location Services on your mobile device in order to provide you with pace and distance data in addition to providing a map of your run route by accessing your GPS and detailed location data. The Lumo Run sensor does not include GPS tracking, so this data needs to be pulled from your phone.

While Lumo Run provides data about your run without your phone, this also means you will not have location data available in your results and will not have a record of your pace, distance or mapped route.

The FAQ doesn't say whether you have to initiate a run on your phone in order to capture GPS data (distance, pace, route). I went for a run carrying my iPhone, but I didn't tap "START RUN"–no GPS data was recorded, even though the Lumo app was open. Can you please clarify this?
